Any Woman... Can be an Icon!

Mary Pickford
While looking up movie icons this weekend, we stumbled across the name ‘Mary Pickford’. The more we read, the more we loved her. Mary Pickford was a true icon, smart, sophisticated and stunning. She was ‘America’s Sweetheart’ (though she was Canadian) and is considered one of the most beautiful and successful actresses who has ever lived. Originally from Toronto, ON, she moved to the USA and became ‘Hollywood’s first superstar’, receiving an Oscar for her role in ‘Coquette’ in 1929 and the ‘Academy Honorary Award’ in 1976 for contribution to cinema.

Although a real beauty and often remembered only for this, the reason she is our ‘Icon’ is for her shrewd business sense. She moulded herself into the ‘darling’ of cinema whilst her strong and independent personality continued managing film companies, producing and marketing new movies. This incredible woman became Hollywood’s first millionaire aged only 24, she was the first to take a percentage of her movie’s profits and even co-founded the ‘United Artists Studios’ alongside Charlie Chaplin, Fairbanks and Griffiths. Her ambition and drive was limitless! “Mary Pickford was known to more people and loved by more people than any other woman in history”.

“Make them laugh, make them cry, and back to laughter. What do people want to go to the theatre for, an emotional exercise? I am a servant of the people. I have never forgotten that.” – Mary Pickford
